Our puppy and kitten wellness program is designed to help get your new friend started on the right path to a long and healthy life. The first few months are a critical period in your puppy or kitten's development, and we can give you the support and tools necessary to help him or her grow into a well-mannered, healthy adult, including information and advice on nutrition, training, behavior, and socialization.
What vaccines will my puppy/kitten require?
Puppies and kittens should receive vaccines at approximately 8, 12, and 16 weeks of age, with a booster one year later. Some breeders will start the vaccine series a bit earlier (around 6 weeks of age), and that's okay. We will continue to vaccinate every 3-4 weeks, ensuring the final vaccine is given at 16 weeks or older.
Does my puppy/kitten need to be dewormed?
Yes! Puppies and kittens should be dewormed every 2 weeks from 2 weeks to 12 weeks of age, and then every month until 6 months of age. Beyond 6 months of age, a parasite prevention plan will be tailored to fit your their needs based on lifestyle.
Nutrition - which diet is best?
There are 3 important things to consider when choosing a diet for your puppy or kitten
- SAFETY - the leading cause of pet food recalls is contamination (i.e. Salmonella poisoning). We recommend you choose a diet that undergoes strict and regular testing to ensure it is free of potential contaminants.
- BALANCED - look for the AAFCO certification which demonstrates that the diet has been assessed to meet the nutritional needs of the pet
- LIFESTAGE APPROPRIATE - all puppies and kittens should be on a diet that is formulated to meet the needs of a growing pet. It is important to consider whether your pet is a large breed as well since they have slightly different nutritional requirements.
At Crowchild, we support diets made by Royal Canin, Hill's, and Purina due to their stringent safety protocols and scientific research in the development of their veterinary formulas
